A visit with Vera--whether in the series or via the television adaptation, now in its 11th season--is always welcome.While I have no desire to read thrillers in which Covid plays a major role, watching a fictional illness spread across the world is surprisingly gripping and intriguing. Pietro, the father, finds a notebook filled with his daughter’s handwriting, her brother’s name scrawled repeatedly on the page. The engrossing plot delves into the friends' reminiscences, which seem innocuous but possess an underlying menace. It is forbidden to copy anything for publication elsewhere without written permission from the copyright holder. His crime spreads its tentacles throughout the novel, but Varvello is more interested in exploring its fallout – how his mother has never been able to move on, driven to despair by her son’s actions; how his father has struggled to survive; what it’s done to his older sisters.

If one of the women who’d shared that first weekend of connection had been free, perhaps that would have worked. Ann Cleeves is on top form in this atmospheric mystery that gradually expands to include more shifty characters on the mainland, and, on her tenth outing, you feel the pain beneath Vera’s blowsy bravado. One of them, Isobel, died that weekend, rushing off after a row and attempting to drive over the causeway while the tide was rushing in (“Her vehicle had been swept from the causeway in the high tide of the equinox, tossed from the road like a toy by the wind and the waves”). This fair-play mystery brims with fully developed suspects and motives that are hidden in plain sight.There’d been no physical contact – it hadn’t come to that – but Philip had sensed the tension, which was so different from the weekend’s general mood of easy companionship.

What a pleasure to be back in the hands of Ann Cleeves and (for me at least) her greatest creation, DCI Vera Stanhope. She is the creator of popular detectives Vera Stanhope and Jimmy Perez who can now be found on television in ITV's Vera and BBC One's Shetland. This year would mark fifty years of friendship and he needed to offer a prayer of thanks and to remember.
