This idea is reflected in names like Nollaig mhòr, ‘Big Christmas’ – given to Christmas Day – and Nollag bheag, ‘Little Christmas’ or ‘New Year’s Day’. In addition the caterpillars, and associated moths,can be animportant as a food source for other garden wildlife. However, I know where my dahlias are because I protect them over winter with a pile of mulch, marked with a stick. Naturally regenerated birch (grown from seed fallen from a tree) appears to be less prone to this disease. It then develops dark grey/black ‘arrows and diamonds’ or horizontal streaks of grey in the case of downy birch.
There grows a really tasty pinetree near me, and this makes a very citrus-like tasting tea which also makes you happy and full of vitamin C. Bobbins and spinning reels were made of birch wood, back in the days of the Lancashire Cotton industry. Birch bark contains small amounts of salicylic acid, which has similar benefits to aspirin (salicylic acid is the chemical precursor to the active ingredient in aspirin).Downy birch have less jagged margin teeth than the Silver birch, and the leaves are diamond-shaped, and less rounded.
This tall tree is recognisable by its smooth, shiny bark often pale or white with deep furrows in mature specimens. The dwarf birch, as its name suggests, hugs the ground at a height of no more than two or three feet, and is often stunted even more by the grazing of hungry deer or sheep. The young twigs of downy birch have small hairs, whereas the silver birch twigs have small white wart like structures. Birch trees are particularly associated with specific fungi, including fly agaric, woolly milk cap, birch milk cap, birch brittlegill, birch knight, chanterelle and the birch polypore (razor strop). Both species have long and slender branches, those of the silver birch tending to droop gracefully while those of the downy birch are carried more upright.
On larger trees whilst some parts of the plant may be defoliated this will have no effect on the health of the host. They feed gregariously and can cause a significant amount of defoliation on their deciduous tree hosts. After having read and tried this easy and very tasty method of making twig-tea, I started experimenting with different trees.
