At the other end, the highest seat height is 15 inches (38cm) so it’s not the best choice of balance bike for a very tall child as there isn't be much growing room. Air filled tyres offer better traction over surfaces, bumps in the pavements, on grass and dirt tracks etc. The Rothan 12 is a toddler-to-preschooler aluminium-frame balance bike, designed for children with an inside leg measurement of 30cm to 42cm. Sturdy, stylish and excellent quality, this is a fantastic investment for the 3 to 6 year age group.The higher-spec balance bikes tend to have brakes, scaled down to child size, either on both wheels or just on the rear wheel. A longer wheelbase is generally better because a longer wheelbase offers stability and is ultimately easier to balance on. You need to know your child's inside leg (or inseam) measurement and you need to know the seat height of the balance bike. The seat can be adjusted without any tools from approximately 34cm to 42cm which is a nice height range for most 3 year olds. The features 14 inch wheels with pneumatic tyres so will give a smooth ride and give good traction on more uneven surfaces.

We like the quick-release seat post and the long wheelbase – and, icing on the toddler cake, the little bell. The stepover is nice and low, the light-action brake levers are small enough for little hands to wrap round easily, and the comfy, scooped saddle definitely helps keep a small bottom centred. And it’s great that it comes almost fully assembled – all you’ll need to do is tighten the screws (Allen key provided) and top up the air in the tyres.

Kellie, mum of our child tester, Chester, 3 (pictured above), found the Rookie's impressively low weight and adjustable reach made the bike easy and enjoyable to ride and said, "Chester is able to hold his bike up on his own and pick it up to tackle curbs, meaning he can be more independent and have more fun. Kids have somewhere to put their feet while riding (in the middle) and it doesn't get in the way of their stride.
