The boards are there just to organize stacks of cards so there isn’t any time with fiddly pieces and trying to get them into their correct places. The total value of the Allies you play may be more than what is required, but the extra Ally points are lost. If you gain multiple Key tokens at once, and you end up with more than three Keys in your possession (including any provided by Lords),you may choose which Keys you will use to take control of a Location. Also, each Monster you slay during the game will earn you the gratitude of your peers-and an Influence Point bonus.

Abyss is a game about undersea politics (yes, that’s a thing) where two to four players compete to have the most influence, by affiliating allies, defeating monsters, lobbying the council, recruiting lords, and controlling locations. You are collecting those ally cards for this as these both offer points, abilities and also keys that will help you unlock locations which will offer you more scoring opportunities too.Recruiting a third Lord showing a Key means that you have to take a I think theme wise that you pay these jellyfish and seahorses for the lords to eat, which is kind of rough, but the lords do look like they would eat them. Finally, each player places (affiliates) the lowest-value Ally of e ach Race they still hold in their hands. The deck contains five factions in five colours; squid, crabs, seahorses, jellyfish (jellies), and shellies (not the real term but I like this better). A separate threat track, plus tokens for monsters and keys, is used to track what bonuses are available to players who push their luck whilst exploring the depths.

The Location cards have some fun and interesting powers as well as additional end game scoring opportunities. Although functionally irrelevant whoever holds the Scourge at the end of the game gains five points. If the card is a monster, it can be defeated (simply cashed in) to gain the reward at the current level of the treat track (increasingly valuable combinations of pearls, monster tokens and keys), or the player can carry on exploring but must move the threat token up the threat track, thereby increasing the reward for the next monster defeated. You can keep going in this fashion until either you elect to stop by taking the card or fighting a monster, or you get to the end of the track. Some are one time bonuses and some of the lords have ongoing abilities which are active until the lord is covered by a location tile.

Some cards feature pearls, and when you have as many or more pearls as whoever has the pearl majority card, you take this card from them. But this is a unique opportunity to prove your value and use that influence to ascend to the throne. In terms of gameplay, on your turn there is only three things you can do, so it’s fairly easy to teach and learn. This helps give the game a lot of replay value as each game seems to play out just a little differently.

During the card draft (“Exploring the Depths”) you still have the same choice to make when you reveal a monster; fight it or continue to explore.
