About eczema

Eczema can be managed with moisturisers known as emollients. Emollients are medical moisturisers, which soften and soothe dry skin. Emollients create an artificial layer on the skin to trap moisture in the surface of the skin, as well as attracting moisture to the skin surface. There are many different types of emollients and you can find out more about them here. Do not store the foam canister near high heat, and do not store or use it near an open flame. Because foam canisters are under pressure, do not puncture or burn the canister. Emollients are used to hydrate the skin. Their effects are short lived and they should be applied frequently. To be effective, adequate quantities of emollients should be prescribed. Suitable quantities to prescribe: see Emollient Prescribing Guidelines These recommended amounts are for twice daily application for an adult. To keep the skin well hydrated, leave-on emollients should be applied in adequate amounts to sufficiently cover dry and inflamed areas. 500g = 1 tub or pump dispenser. Quantities required will vary with the size of the patient, the severity and extent of skin dryness. For children approximately half this amount is suitable. Soya Bean Oil 83% w/w, Comperlan (Oleic Acid Diethanolamide), Macrogol Lauryl Ether (Laureth-4), Perfume, Propylene Glycol, Butylated Hydroxytoluene. Indications:
