UHD follow ups beginning with the second season and continuing on, HBO actually didn't end up releasing the HBO has released the complete series on Blu-ray previously, and Seasons One and Eight have been released on 4K Ultra HD as well (you can read our review of Season One here on The Bits). Now, after a long wait, the network has finally upgraded the rest of the series to 4K too. gift giving ideas, HBO is now bringing out the entire Game of Thrones series in 4K UHD, with many but not all of the previously released Okay, that’s going too far, but the set isvery nice, particularly the SteelBook edition from Best Buy. Not only is this Game of Throneswith better picture quality than ever before, but it comes with all the extras the show has produced over the years and then some, from deleted scenes to History & Lore features to full-on documentaries.

I then watched the Great Pit of Daznak scene in The Dance of Dragons (skipping the heartbreaking scene when Shireen is burned at the stake; I’ll get to that on a full rewatch) when the Sons of the Harpy close in on Daenerys. The fighting and the defense of the Targaryen queen looked like it was taking place right in front of you, and the arrival of Drogon to save the day was insane. The effort put into creating a realistic look for the dragons can be further appreciated by seeing the detail in 4K UHD, and the fire looks extremely real (because it was, as they used real fire and actually lit stunt people on fire). Note: Screenshots are sourced from 1080 Blu-rays, though be aware this set does not include 1080 discs for the actual seriesThe steelbooks themselfs are gorgeous and I love the art on them and the season theme cutout on the inside. First, there was an HBO Shop exclusive version of Season One on DVD that included a special DVD bonus disc with a Creating the World of Westeros featurette. Second, the Season Two Blu-ray available at Target had a bonus disc that added Invitation to the Set, Arya’s New Look, Art Direction, and Weapons featurettes. Third, the Season Three Blu-ray was available at Target with a bonus disc that included a 90-minute An Evening with Game of Thrones 2013 Emmy panel discussion. Finally, Season Eight was available on Blu-ray at Target and Walmart with exclusive bonus discs that added How the Storm Was Born and From Renderings to Reality: The Visual Effects of Season 8 respectively. It’s a shame that this content isn’t included on the 4K set, but you should be aware that most of it is available for free viewing on YouTube (at least some of it—and actually quite a lot more—on HBO’s official Game of Thrones channel). And though it’s not a bonus disc, don’t forget that HBO made a change to Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season after eagle-eyed fans detected the likeness of a certain political figure as one of the severed heads in the season’s final episode. So if you want that scene as originally broadcast, you’ll want to hang onto that first Blu-ray set in particular.
