About Monica Dickens

Hugely well remembered, Follyfoot (which was shot all on film) is one of the best family drama series ever, unlike most such series it never strayed too often into story of the week territory, maintained continuity throughout its three season run and mixed adventure and humour in equal measure. Follyfoot Farm is a retirement home for old or unwanted horses, invariably horses rescued from a cruel fate or cruel owners. It's run by the Colonel who is helped by his stepdaughter, Callie, and two stable-hands, Dora and Steve. These three youngsters have plenty to do at the stables, but can always find time to get involved in the mysteries and adventures that abound at Follyfoot.

Follifoot (note the slightly different spelling) is a small village just three miles from Harrogate, not far from the Yorkshire Television studios in Leeds. Being a series about neglected horses the show often featured some hard hitting storylines including some where the horse doesn’t make it through. Throughout the series you expect that Steve and Dora will eventually become an item but despite some lingering looks and unspoken commitments they never did. By the time the third season arrived Dora was in charge of Follyfoot after the Colonel becomes too ill to look after it himself. It is raining heavily and tensions are high. Steve tells Dora that they don't have enough room for their horses and has arranged for some to be farmed out to a local stable. Dora is furious and would prefer to keep the retired horses rather than the schooled ones that bring in money. Ron too gets caught up in the tensions and he and Steve fight. The Colonel arrives and agrees with Steve, but Dora is not happy. Cast: Alethea Charlton (Phyllis Wetherby), Ronald Leigh-Hunt (Bernard Fox), Geoffrey Morris (Vet), Paul Whitsun-Jones (Fat Man) | NOTE: Desmond Llewellyn did not appear in this episode. The Follyfoot Quiz book is fairly easy to find in the UK, although not as common as the Follyfoot titles themselves. It is hard to find elsewhere. A fantasy series where a girl is chosen by a mysterious supernatural horse to help people, and battle against evil doings!
