About this deal

a timely and beautifully produced picture book that helps to explain to young children in KS1 what happened during those terrifying three days when so much of London was in flame. [...] Highly recommended. (Clare Childs Reading Zone Librarian's Book Choice) The top of The Monument to the Great Fire of London is reached by climbing 311 steps. Unfortunately due to the nature of the attraction, it is not suitable for people with mobility difficulties or people that use a wheelchair. Pepys spoke to the Admiral of the Navy and agreed they should blow up houses in the path of the fire. The hope was that by doing this they would create a space to stop the fire spreading from house to house. We currently operate a 100% searching policy, meaning all bags belonging to visitors are subject to search. The maximum size of bag that is allowed inside The Monument is H40 x W25 x 15 cm.

Soon London was filled with smoke. The sky was red with huge flames from the fire. By Monday, 300 houses had burned down. Try and find some new jobs listed here in the key that were not listed in source 1 (for example: 124. weavers)Any bags larger than this size cannot be taken to the top of The Monument. This is to protect the historic structure and because the staircase and viewing platform are narrow at some points. Large bags are required to be left in a designated bag storage area at the bottom of the staircase. In KS1, your students will be expected to learn about a wide variety of historical topics. They will be taught about the differences between the past and the present and will begin to understand how people's way of life changed throughout history. Alongside yourself and their classmates, students will be allowedto discuss key events throughout history and ask questions which will help to reinforce their understanding. These history resources for primary schools have been designed by teachers to help you cover these key aims of the curriculum and save vital planning time. The 202ft column, designed by Sir Christopher Wren and Dr Robert Hooke, was built to commemorate the Great Fire of 1666 and stands on the piazza between Fish Street Hill and Monument Street.

The questions progress in difficulty, so those based on source 5 are a little harder than those questions based on source 1. It is suggested that teachers/helpers read through the documents together with the class. Have a go at reading the original document first to spot familiar words, but all documents are transcribed and have simplified transcripts. Here are some suggestions for further activities Amazingly, only a few people are recorded as having died during the fire. This is probably because most deaths were not recorded. Thousands died the following winter as the conditions in the temporary accommodation erected after the fire were terrible. There are a lot of halls. These were meeting places for different kinds of craftsmen. For example, number 130 is the Carpenter’s Hall. Can you find any more? In pairs, talk about what people had to do in these jobs. (Your teacher will help you with the unusual ones.)Create your own artwork based on the fire. You could use this painting by Jan Griffier for inspiration. The summer of 1666 was long, hot and dry. The City of London, with its wooden homes, lit by candles and crammed together in narrow streets, was accustomed to fires. When a blaze broke out in Pudding Lane on the morning of the 2nd of September, no one could have suspected it would lead to such destruction. We also have general history display resources like timelines and posters to brighten up your classroom. Each history display resource can be used to decorate the walls, windows and doors of your learning space. They will help to support your teaching throughout a range of topics and keep your students engaged as they explore some of history's most important people, places and events.
