How to Hide an Empire: A History of the Greater United States is a must read for anyone interested in obscure American history and the revolutionary switch from annexing territory for resources, to divesting large colonies and investing in military bases around the globe. In total there are five chapters devoted to the topic of globalisation and trade, and this makes it especially useful for any Geography student. Immerwahr provides a great deal of context to many of the issues and topics found in Geography, especially the flow of trade and economics. Their opposition, he complained to Jefferson, had “become too open, violent and serious to be longer winked at. A really interesting read, exceedingly well written, with a lot of terrific human stories and some cracking jokes, even.

Those whose interest in the territories is piqued by How to Hide an Empire might want to read The Not- Quite States of America by Doug Mack, an account of life in the U.

The French Romantic François-René de Chateaubriand lifted passages from Boone’s biography for his influential epic, Les Natchez, about a Frenchman living among the North American Indians. The Japanese occupied the islands for more than a year and transported the tiny population to japan as prisoners of war. The other image that is immediately associated with the US, something that is also immediately recognisable across the globe, is the ‘logo map’ of the nation. The ensuing guerrilla warfare played to the insurgency's strengths: knowledge of the land and the popularity of the cause.

We travel to the Guano Islands, where prospectors collected one of the nineteenth century's most valuable commodities, and the Philippines, site of the most destructive event on U.The histories of Puerto Rico, The Philippines, and other places under the protection of the US government often proved anything but cheerful. While this is important, at times the detail of the descriptions impedes the flow of the narrative and detracts from the subject. As Boonesborough’s settlers had discovered, the United States wasn’t the only country with claim to the land west of the Appalachians. That was the same decade Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died, both, as it happened by near-inconceivable coincidence, on the same day—the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It shows the history of empire, but it also shows us that the concept of empire isn’t one that just exists in history – empire is something that continues today.
