There was plenty of beneficial rainfall early in 2020 but also plenty of heat which has given exceptionally low yields. Cockburn’s Special Reserve port is created from a variety of high quality grapes, which are all hand picked by Cockburn’s master pickers. Tawny Port Wines are young wines of several years, aged between two and three years in wood barrels, giving them aromas of nuts. The special hot and dry climatic conditions of this Douro sub-region give a unique style and quality to all of Cockburn’s Ports. This 642 acre property is the essence of Cockburn’s vintage and other premium Ports, including Special Reserve.

Cockburn's Fine Ruby Port is one of the most popular ports in the world, loved for its rich, fruity flavor and smooth texture. Acquired in 1962 by a multinational, the emphasis shifted away from Vintage Port, but following the Symington family’s acquisition of Cockburn’s in 2010, the company focus was shifted back to one thing: the quality of the wine. Special reserve still has the lusciously ripe, vibrant fruit of youth and lovely tannins which give it the slightly peppery spice on the tongue. The memorable retrospective Vintage Port tastings of 2012 and 2015 included Cockburn’s wines dating as far back as 1863 and provided key insights into the style that made Cockburn’s so admired in its heyday. The brand also has a tradition of humorous marketing, with many people still fondly remembering the legendary TV ads from the 70s and 80s.In 2010, Cockburn's was sold to Symington Family Estates, a family-owned business with over 1,006 hectares (2,400 acres) of vineyards in the Douro Valley. In this Port Wine, the wood ageing characteristics are notorious, as well as ripe fruit, which allowed it to acquire great silk like smoothness.

Touriga Nacional, the Douro’s finest grape variety, makes up almost one third of the Canais vineyard, whilst the Douro’s average is no more than 3%.

Cockburn's Special Reserve Port is a rich and full-bodied fortified wine that is aged for up to five years in oak barrels. Medium bodied on the palate with flavours of black currant fruit with a good grip and firm tannins, which leads to a long elegant finish. This longer wood ageing gives its fruity and full-bodied palate a distinctive dry finish, making Cockburn's Special Reserve the benchmark for all Reserve Ports. In the words of Robert Cockburn himself, “the quality of the wine – that is the first thing to be looked to”.
