About this deal

The print been scaled for the best fit within the sheet and set within a white margin to assist with framing and mounting. In 2015, the campaign group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), wrote to the town council suggesting that the image of the fisherman be dropped in favour of one showing a flatfish, with the tagline of "A happy plaice". It is believed that the slogan itself was thought up by an unknown member of staff for the Great Northern Railway – so if you have any relatives who worked for the company at that time you never know it could have been them. It was commissioned by the then Great Northern Railway to encourage visitors to use their service to take them on their seaside breaks to Skegness.

John Hassall visited Skegness in 1936, and was quoted as saying "[that Skegness] was even more bracing and attractive than I had been led to expect. Sozzled or not, our spirited bather brings joy and amusement through her lighthearted antics on the sandy shores of Skegness. This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer. This print from Mary Evans Picture Library transports us back in time to an era when laughter was abundant on seaside holidays. Preserved by the NRM/Pictorial Collection at the National Railway Museum, this print allows us to appreciate both the artistic brilliance of John Hassall's work and its historical significance within Lincolnshire's trade, industry, agriculture, fishing industries through postcards like these. This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. There are different versions of the travel poster but the fisherman and slogan are always part of the design with the original painting hanging in the town hall at Skegness. As we gaze upon this image today, we are reminded of Skegness' timeless allure and how it continues to captivate generations with its unique blend of seaside beauty and nostalgic charm. To deliver them to you as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible, we send them out by Royal Mail 2nd class post (unless, of course, you’ve paid for another postal service). Teeming with detail and activity, the painting was eventually bought by Queen Victoria, who had fond memories of visiting Ramsgate with her mother between 1825 and 1836.
