However, if Dot inspires one parent to turn away from their screen and play with their child (and I hope it does for hundreds of people) then it is worth it's weight in gold and jewels. Vashti says that she can’t draw. Has there ever been a time when you thought that you couldn’t do something? How did you overcome it? Vashti ‘sat glued to her chair’. Was she really glued to it? What kind of literary technique is this? This is an attractive book. The author hand lettered the text and illustrated the book with watercolor, ink, and tea. Yes, tea! Painting with tea is so clever! I like modern art and I enjoyed the illustrations. A little boy gazes up at Vashti. He wishes he could draw and be a fantastic artist like her but he can’t even draw a straight line with a ruler. Vashti gives the boy some paper and a pencil and asks the boy to show her one of his lines. She looks carefully at his work and then says…

At the beginning of the story we meet a young girl, Vashti. Her art class is over but her paper is empty. Vashti believes she cannot draw, but when her teacher gently tells her to “just make a mark,” she jabs at a blank sheet of paper and signs her name. The next week, her art teacher has framed the dot, and the action sets Vashti on a journey of artistic freedom and self-discovery that culminates in the little girl passing on her new-found creative spirit. As an early marketing executive at Facebook, Randi created and ran the social media pioneer’s marketing programs. She led the company’s U.S. election and international politics strategy and created Facebook’s live streaming initiatives during the 2008 Presidential Inauguration. Randi was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2011 for her innovative coverage of the 2010 mid-term elections that integrated online and TV coverage in unique formats. Vashti experiments with different colours. Can you try to mix colours to make new ones? Make a chart that shows what happens when you mix different groups of colours together. The next time Vashti goes to her art class, what does she see? The jab of pen… the little dot… is hanging above her teacher’s desk in a beautiful frame.

The Dot by Peter Reynolds - Read and Create

Use the words ‘Just make a mark and see where it takes you,’ as inspiration for your own artwork. What type of mark will you make? Where will it take you? What materials will you use? Most children struggle at some point and feel like they just can’t do something. The Dot by Peter H. How Do People Celebrate International Dot Day?

The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds | Waterstones

Vashti goes from being a sad and angry child, with no confidence, to someone who has the maturity and ability to help someone else to believe in themselves. This hand-lettered book, the first in the series "Creatrilogy," is all about encouragement of artistic self-expression. Vashti doesn't believe she has any ability to create. With a small invitation to "just make a mark and see where it takes you" by her teacher, she begins a journey that leads to art that is all her own. It seems this book has been reviewed by a lot of adults who haven't actually read it to children. There are a lot of "this book is a good reminder for children and adults" or "kids today . . ." This review is for someone who is looking to read this book to their child, not just as a novelty. As of right now, International Dot Day is celebrated in a whopping 192 countries around the world, with more than 19 million people taking part. Why Do People Celebrate International Dot Day?

Vashti doesn't believe she can draw, when her art teacher urges her to just make a dot and sign her name it changes Vashti's entire view of herself and others. Randi has appeared on CNN, Good Morning America, the Today show, Bloomberg News, and ABC’s World News. She was also a correspondent for the 2011 Golden Globe Awards and the World Economic Forum in Davos. Randi was recently appointed to the United Nations Global Entrepreneurs Council and the World Economic Forum’s Global Council on Social Media. The teacher smiles gently and encourages Vashti to just make a mark. In a rage Vashti grabs a felt-tip pen and jabs the paper.
