About this deal

Focusrite's Clarett+ 8Pre 18-in/20-out audio interface is a powerful foundation for your studio or mobile recording rig.

It sports eight great-sounding Clarett+ microphone preamplifiers, an outstanding dynamic range, and ultra-fast, low-latency performance enabled by USB-C. Added the ability to change the colour of the good, pre clipping and clipping stages of the Gain Halos on Scarlett 3rd Generation interfaces. Includes Ableton Live Lite, three months of Pro Tools Artist, and the Hitmaker Expansion, with plugins from Antares, Softube, Landr, XLN Audio and more. These boast all-analogue Air - augmented with relay control and impedance switching - delivering recordings with low noise, low distortion and high headroom.

The features that were a big step up from the cheap tascam I was using is the monitor section (lovely), the preamps, and the adat possibilities.the published spec is ‑106dB), which is also a very worthwhile improvement over the previous model’s ‑103dB. I’m not sure why, but the Clarett+ 2Pre is claimed to achieve a slightly better result than its predecessor at 119dB (A‑wtd). This New interface is so clean and good I wish I did this months ago --- everything just tracks better. The switchable "Air Effect" for each mic preamp closely emulates the sound of transformer-coupled circuits to give a high frequency sheen and polish to your recordings right from the get-go, on the road or in the studio. Sure, you can replicate their functions within your DAW, but it’s more useful to have them implemented within the control panel utility, as this allows you to apply them to other software applications too, and eliminates the risk of accidentally bouncing out a mix in mono.

So there shouldn’t be any problems with either high or low source levels, although the maximum channel gain is 57dB, which precludes working directly with really quiet sources. There's a bit of a difference between close-miking your guitar amp or vocal with a 57 etc, and a stereo pair of quality SDC's in a large stone hall at 10 meters or more. I just realized this morning while taking a shower that the hot water is almost exactly like the pres on the Clarett. The Clarett 8Pre interface features brand new preamps that model the impedance and transformer resonance of our original ISA transformer-based mic pre, delivering the classic Focusrite signature sound at the touch of a button. In some ways, the most radical change that the Clarett range introduces compared with previous Focusrite interfaces concerns the software utility used to control them.

All-analogue Air mode, with impedance switching, recreates the legendary effect of Focusrite's ISA mic pres, adding clarity and presence to drums, guitars and vocals. This is also useful for intelligibility when using the mic inputs for live streams and online meetings.
