About this deal

It took a while for me to realize what had occurred. It was brief and had a depressing message about love and death. I adore the images used here. I guess that’s what makes people do horrible things- they think whatever they’re doing isn’t nearly as bad as what somebody else will do." Characterisation across all three novels are extremely bland and flat and motivations and emotional states of the characters are inconsistent/erratic for no purpose. When I started reading this, I was confused and very intrigued. Not knowing what was going on or what to expect was thrilling. The further I progressed in the story, the more darkness surrounded me. This is what true dark obsession is like. It really begs the question of how far would you go to please the one you love?

He avoids this problem with the first story by making it entirely conversation, but the same can't be said for the last two. So why—and how—did this independently published epistolary novel gain so much recognition? Their next best-selling title has sold around 500 or 600 copies. It’s a question Weirdpunk gets from other indie writers and publishing houses all the time. And Richard… well, he doesn’t really know. The Trees Grew Because I Bled Here - That was a wee bit horrifying. I'm kidding. That was A LOT horrifying. Yikes! How much are you willing to give to those you love?Every family has a myth for the young to inherit – an undocumented fable passed between mouths, a grave illness to be contracted – as if the very words were a blight to infect the youth with and let them know they’re now welcome to the fold. I also had an issue with the way the characters texted. As well as showing no personal information or personality to get to know each other, the way they spoke felt really forced and unconvincing. It felt like the author was trying to show off their writing skills, meaning the characters texted as it they were authors in awkward superfluous language rather than speaking as though they are actually human. A startling affair… I’ll be cleaning up particles of darkness in my office for weeks.”– Josh Malerman, author of Bird Box andMalorie

Eight stories of literary dark fiction from a master storyteller. Exploring the shadow side of love, these are tales of grief, obsession, control. Intricate examinations of trauma and tragedy in raw, poetic prose. In these narratives, a woman imagines horrific scenarios whilst caring for her infant niece; on-line posts chronicle a cancer diagnosis; a couple in the park with their small child encounter a stranger with horrific consequences; a toxic relationship reaches a terrifying resolution… Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke by Eric LaRocca is a novella about obsession and how far someone will go to get what they want. And in November, Weirdpunk is accepting submissions for an upcoming anthology titled Stories of the Eye, edited by Sam Richard and Joanna Koch. They’re seeking horror stories “that explore the complex relationships between artists and models. Go beyond the male gaze. Show us the queer gaze, the disabled gaze, the un-colonialized gaze, the intergalactic gaze.” A married couple Vince and Terry are at the park with their son Philip when a couple approach them - Lyric and Melody who want to play a little game.Eric LaRocca's superb collection Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke and Other Misfortunes is cutting edge horror with pristine writing sharp enough to slice open your skin.
