About this deal

Only a smart radiator valve that performs well in all our test areas will become a Best Buy, meaning you can be confident in spending your money. More fine-grained control over when the valves open up. Right now I can just choose settings “1-5”, but this doesn’t allow me to say “This valve should be open under 18°C in the morning, and under 19°C in the evening”. This is something that I lose with my TRVs (compared to smart valves), but again – honestly – it’s not something I think would benefit me right now. Most of the rooms in my house are use evenly enough throughout the day, and most heat up (and cool down) consistently too – so I don’t need this level fine-grained control currently.

If you’re looking for the most powerful and flexible heating system, then the Genius Hub should be top of your list. Designed and built by a UK company, this is a seriously impressive heating system that can control practically all types of heat source, from combi boilers to electric. As you’d expect from such a system, control over individual rooms comes courtesy of smart radiator valves. This means you’ll need radiators with TRV valves to start with, or be prepared to stump up the money to change your current valves to TRV valves. TRV valves are the type that enable you to adjust the temperature of the radiator. And figuring out the temperatures that different rooms needed to be at to feel comfortable was something of an issue for the first few days. It’s definitely a more labor-intensive process to figure out the heating requirements of each room and the schedules, and we didn’t get it right for the first few days, leading to some cold evenings and hot nights. One of the major draws of Evohome is that it can control not only radiators, but, with additional kit, hot water and underfloor heating. Our installer found it hilarious that our flat was so small we only needed to have three radiators hooked up – the Evohome is designed for big houses with complex heating and hot water systems. Both Vaillant and Worcester use load compensation making the combined TRV and smart control set up incredibly efficient You can also set the temperature of each room using the thermostatic radiator valves. In the diagram below: The Honeywell Evohome allows you to set schedules for each individual thermostat, so if you know that your bedroom is only used at night, you can set it to be cold during the day, heat up half an hour before you head to bed, and then cool down to your preferred sleeping temperature through the night. Forget expensive installations and hassle – the Nest Thermostat E has been designed so that pretty much everyone should find it easy to install. The new Heat Link E battery-powered bridge attaches to the wires that were used by your old wired thermostat – and that’s it. Starting from scratch, most people should have the system up and running in under an hour. If you don’t have a wired thermostat, you’ll need to have the Heat Link E wired into your boiler, which will most likely mean a professional installation. While the system supports OpenTherm for increased energy savings, at this point your best option is probably a different product.

This is what I have in my house and most of my rooms are set to “4”, with some set to “3” if a particular room tends to get a little too hot.Smart TRV’s do not work with electric radiators (use smart plugs or get a smart electric heater instead) It also means you can optimise your system to ensure you aren’t spending excess money heating rooms that don’t need heating. This allows you to only have heating on when you need it, and in the rooms you need it – potentially saving money on heating bills.

Both Worcester and Vaillant offer their own smart TRVS that are only compatible with their products. Advantages Everything you can do from the touchscreen controller, you can also do from the smartphone app, either remotely or in your home, bar copying schedules between zones. Honeywell has designed the app so you can see all the different zones and related temperatures directly on the home screen. If you haven't already, consider getting a boiler timer or programmer. This allows you to schedule when your heating is on, so you only heat your home when you're in it. A smart thermostat will allow you to do this remotely through your smartphone. These compact devices are a fantastic addition to any smart home because they allow you to connect your heating system to the web. In doing so, you can boost your household’s energy efficiency by taking the reins on the temperature of your home throughout the day, whether that be from your smartphone or by creating a personalised schedule to fit your heating needs. Hands-On Expertise & Collective Knowledge: Our team boasts extensive DIY experience and in-depth knowledge. In short, if I didn’t have TRVs then I probably would go out and buy smart radiator valves. But since I already have thermostatic valves, I don’t see the benefit of upgrading to smart thermostatic valves. Recommended Smart Radiator Valves

Members of your family can also have their own logins to the Lyric app, allowing you to share control with others - and also revoke it if necessary. Handy if you’re having someone house sit for you while you’re away. This connecting device plugs into your broadband modem and allows your smart heating appliances to be controlled by your smartphone app. Honeywell HR92UK Radiator Controller - Compatibility Guide Our TRV Compatability Guide for Evohome Controls It’s useful to have voice control, especially if your hands are full, your phone isn't available, or the thermostat is in a different room. In the app, you can use the motion sensors to automatically set up a heating schedule via room occupancy (Footprint mode, which is free forever), or you can use the new Sense mode (subscription required) to set a schedule as standard; but you can also choose to use the motion sensor to only turn on the heat when there’s someone in the room. For example, you could set your living room to use the motion sensor during the day, so if you do have the day off work then your heating can be set to turn on automatically. That’s what we call smart. See how much you're using your heating Many of the apps allow you to monitor your energy use, making it easier to see where you can save money. Those who already have a smart thermostat It will cost you less overall to add smart radiator valves, and can offer further savings with room-by-room control Limited functionality without a smart thermostat You need a compatible smart thermostat if you want to get everything that a smart radiator valve has to offer, as this will allow your valves to communicate with the boiler to turn it on and off.
